About

My research seeks to inform more sustainable housing and urban development, through analysis of the housing experiences, needs and aspirations of diverse social groups, and the policies and practices of city builders and policy makers. I joined UNSW at 2009 after completing a PhD in urban planning (Melbourne University, 2009) and a MA in geography (Tel-Aviv University, 2004).

Research

Some of the key topics in Ilan’s research are:

  • Elite suburbs: lifestyles, social networks, wealth and their impact on planning and development in affluent urban areas.
  • Housing affordability: provision of affordable housing by not-for-profit organisations and public housing authorities; the housing pathways of low-income households, including pathways into and out of social housing and the experiences of low income private renters;
  • Community inclusion for people with intellectual disability: community care practice and policy; ‘encounters’ in neighbourhoods between people with intellectual disability and others.
  • Urban and suburban renewal: drivers and outcomes of market-led housing renewal.
