Laurence joined City Futures Research Centre as a Research Associate in January 2014 after completing his PhD in Geography at the University of Sydney in 2013.  His PhD research focused on the politics of urban sustainability and how cities can respond to environmental challenges of the 21st century.  This research examined the political economies of urban change and its intersection with broader narratives on environment and sustainability policy in Sydney and Perth.  The case study work focused on major urban redevelopment projects and discussed their contribution to urban sustainability policy and increasing inequalities that dominate in Australian cities.

Laurence’s recent work at City Futures has focused on renewal of strata title higher density housing and urban renewal more generally in the context of a market economy. Part of this work involves extensive modelling of renewal feasibility across the metropolitan area of Sydney and mapping the dynamics of housing tenure, housing markets and population in Sydney.  These projects also involve extensive stakeholder interviews, policy analysis, community surveys and community workshops.

Laurence is broadly interested in the intersection of housing markets, urban governance, urban renewal and social-economic outcomes in Australian cities.
