UNSW Built Environment’s word-class research has been recognised in the Excellence in Research for Australia report (ERA), which evaluated research activity and quality in the country's 41 higher education institutions.

The Australian Research Council analysis measured performance across eight broad discipline groups, broken down into 22 fields and 157 specific subject areas. Results are based on a range of indicators including publications and citations, expert review and international benchmarks

Urban and Regional Planning research at UNSW Built Environment has been ranked top in Australia in yesterday’s ERA assessment, achieving the maximum rating of 5 and well above world standard.

The faculty was also ranked joint first with Melbourne University and RMIT for research in the broader built environment and design discipline.

The ERA report highlights the specific research strengths of individual Australian universities and is proof that urban and regional planning research within UNSW BE is at the top of its league.

Dean Professor Alec Tzannes congratulated all involved on their success; 'UNSW Built Environment has raised it's overall ERA rating in the 1200 area from 3 to 4 equaling Melbourne University and only being ranked behind RMIT. This is an excellent result. All who have contributed research are to be congratulated. This ERA assessment also highlighted opportunities and risks in the future that will be discussed over the coming months to ensure we make every effort to hold or improve our position in the future.'
