NSW Healthy Urban Development Checklist Project

City Wellbeing joins AECOM on a NSW Ministry of Health funded project to update the Healthy Urban Development Checklist (HUDC).

The HUDC was developed to provide guidance for health professionals to respond to planning proposals in terms of how well they supported healthy community outcomes.  The tool has increased knowledge and awareness about healthy built environments, and has been used by both health and other professionals to influence development outcomes.

City Wellbeing will undertake a review of the scholarly and practice evidence for the most relevant and current healthy built environment criteria in the Checklist. We will be particularly interested to identify any new and updated evidence for the different criteria. In undertaking the work, City Wellbeing will draw on its experience in compiling the HBEP Literature Review; accompanying Fact Sheets and most recently, The HBE Indicators.

As well as re-thinking how to best communicate the information in the Checklist, advice about NSW planning and local government principles will be updated. The revised HUDC will enable further capacity building around healthy built environments ensuring that planning policies and developments, be they in urban or regional centres, greenfield, brownfield or infill projects, are supportive of communities’ health and wellbeing.
